Cooking with CBD: What is it and Why Should I Cook With It

CBD is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in cannabis. What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol. It’s one of at least 113 cannabinoids that can be found in marijuana and industrial hemp, the plant used to make hemp oil, CBD oil, and CBD edibles. Other than THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD is the most studied natural cannabinoid.

Cannabidiol is a cannabis compound with significant medical benefits but does not have the same psychoactive effects as other naturally occurring cannabinoids (such as tetrahydrocannabinol or THC). CBD counteracts the psychoactivity of THC. The reduced psychoactivity of CBD-rich Cannabis may make it an appealing treatment option for patients seeking anti-inflammatory, anti-pain, anti-anxiety, and anti-spasm effects without disconcerting euphoria or lethargy.

More than any other cannabinoid – CBD has demonstrated potent anticonvulsant effects in animal models of epilepsy. In addition, there have been numerous clinical trials demonstrating the efficacy of CBD as an anti-seizure medication.

Cannabis research suggests that CBD could effectively ease symptoms related to cancer and side effects related to cancer therapies. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved CBD or any other cannabis product to treat cancer or any other medical condition. Still, research shows that CBD may help to reduce the severity of cancer-related symptoms.

There are many ways to use it; you can infuse your food with oil or mix it into your favorite dishes like baking brownies or adding to your favorite recipes. You can even sprinkle tinctures or gummies into food or drinks for a real CBD punch!

Cooking with CBD is fast, easy, and fun! This article will show you how to make cannabutter from scratch to make the most out of your CBD cooking experience!

What you will need to make CBD-infused butter:

1/4 oz of dried cannabis flowers or 1/2 oz of fresh cannabis (dried is preferred)

cheesecloth, strainer, wooden spoon, and saucepan

cheesecloth – available at any grocery store for less than $3

Step 1: Decarboxylation

Preheat oven to 240 degrees. Take your cannabis and break it up into smaller pieces (if you are using real flowers.) Spread the cannabis over a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 40 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes to ensure even cooking.

Step 2: Make canna-oil

2.1 . After your cannabis is oven-baked, it’s time to make canna oil! Place the decarboxylated cannabis into a saucepan with 4 cups of water. Heat on medium until a boiling point – let boil for 90 minutes.

2.2 . After 90 minutes of boiling the mixture, take off the heat and let cool for 15 minutes. Strain the mixture through a cheesecloth. Use a spoon to press down on the cannabis in the cloth to squeeze out as much oil as possible.

Step 3: Let’s make some butter!

3.1 . Measure out 1 cup of water and pour into the saucepan with the infused canna oil. Heat on medium until a boiling point – let boil for 60 minutes.

3.2 . After 60 minutes of boiling the mixture, take off the heat and let cool for 15 minutes. Strain the mixture through cheesecloth a second time over a bowl to collect the oil into a bowl.

3.3 . Place this canna-oil in a saucepan with 2-4 cups unsalted butter. Heat on medium until a boiling point – let boil for 90 minutes, stirring constantly.

3.4 . After 90 minutes of boiling the mixture, take off the heat and let cool for 15 minutes. Strain one more time through cheesecloth to remove any extra plant matter and pour into a jar or container and refrigerate overnight (it will separate – the oil will rise to the top and harden).

3.5 . The next day, you have CBD-infused butter! Scoop out what you need and use however you please! You can place it on toast; heat it in a saucepan and add it to rice, vegetables, or pasta; melt it down and mix it into mashed potatoes, or add it to a crockpot and use it in a slow cooker meal! It’s up to you how you want to cook with CBD butter.
